synopsis
Urban middle
class life in our country today is full of paradoxes. And the play “Chauraha”
tries to expose many of the contradictions in the society through different
characters. The play deals with various issues that confront our society and
shows how most people are in a quandary when faced with possible choices or
no-choices. Communal tensions, the questions of caste, the status of women, the
plight of the downtrodden, the dilemmas facing the intelligentsia, the debates
over economic policies, increasing inequalities, the clashes of multiple identities
– Makarand Sathe tries to capture the interplay of all such issues. There is a zeal to change things but the
status quo persists with a vengeance. There is a search for peace but there is
a violent undercurrent. There is a sense of togetherness but there is
opportunism and a visible disconnect.
